The Iron Butt Rally is held in the United States every two years. Although we have looked into moving the rally to other countries, only Australia offers the wide-open spaces without international borders for the running of this 11 day, 11,000 mile plus marathon.

To completely describe the Iron Butt Rally would take an entire book. In fact, one of the best sources for information is Iron Butt competitor Ron Ayres's book, "Against the Wind" available from the Iron Butt Association. Many other unique stories have been written about the rally and some of the best ones are available on the IBA web site www.ironbuttrally.com and can be viewed by scrolling through the Iron Butt Stories sub-menu above. The Iron Butt first ran in 1984. In 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 the rally started from Montgomeryville Cycle Center near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States.

The Iron Butt was not held again until 1991 when it came under the management of the Iron Butt Association. While the basic format of the original rally remained, two important things have changed; to insure the quality of the event, the rally is run every other year and the starting and ending points are rotated to different sections of the United States.

2009 Iron Butt Rally
The official announcement
The 2009 Iron Butt Rally will take off on Monday, August 24, 2009,
from the southeastern US. Once again, it will be a challenge not only to your riding skills but also your ability to map a successful route in order to maximize points and solve the time/distance equation. In no particular order, the checkpoints/Finish will be in Washington State, the Chicago, Illinois area and the Southern California area. Locations, dates and times will be announced at a later date. Please note: the rally is finishing across the country from the start line!

As in 2005 and 2007, there will be a minimum number of points required in order to qualify as a finisher. In other words, it is possible that you will ride for 11 days, not obtain enough points and NOT qualify as a finisher.
Important: There will not be the opportunity to be a checkpoint-to-checkpoint rider. If this finds you shaking in your boots, remember the Iron Butt Rally is for the World's Toughest Riders.

Note the 'new' Rally concept. To keep the Rally fresh and a challenge, new rules are in place. Gone are the days when you could just ride checkpoint to checkpoint to be concidered a finisher. Now you HAVE TO accumulate sufficient bonus locations and points to reach a staggering 190,000 points over the course of the rally.
In 2007 some 33 riders were classed as DNF, did not finish, of which 27 failed to accumulate enough points. several actually reached the end and were then dealt the cruel blow

Several UK riders have entered the draw for the 2009 Iron Butt Rally, we will keep you updated of who is in and who is out after the draw is made in April
11,000 miles in under 11 days, could you do it?
